Marketing Ideas for Authors
As an author looking to sell books, there’s a wide array of book marketing tactics you can use to amplify your
book’s exposure and reach more readers. To spark inspiration and get those creative juices flowing we put
together some ideas.
Some of these ideas can help directly increase book sales, while others may help expand your platform, which
can lead to future sales. Not all of these ideas will be applicable all the time, and we encourage you to consider
the impact each might have before deciding where to invest your time. But we hope these ideas will give you
plenty of options when developing your own marketing plan.
Have a Presence
If you want people to buy your book, you have to be found online. Either you can have a website or
be on social media. You run the risk of being missed if you do not have a social media presence.
Give Your Book Away
Most people aren’t willing to shell out the money on authors they don’t know. The best way to get
their attention is to let them read your book for free. They will read it and hopefully tell others about it.
Get Reviews
Get reviews and people will start to see your book. Reviews are online ways of telling others about a
book. If people love it, they talk about it. If they hate, they talk about it. Others listen. Get reviews and
get your book known. You can get reviews through Virtual Book Tours or you can approach reviewers
yourself and get it done.
Find books that are similar to yours. Contact the reviewers to see if they are willing to read yours and
review it. Ask people in your groups if they are willing to review your book. The more reviews you
have the better.
Network
No one will know about your book if they don’t know about you. That is where networking comes into
play. You network so people know you exist, who you are, what you do and then expand that
connection the same way. You network on social media sites and at gatherings.
