About the author
Irijah Alkins has an enthusiasm for words. Her adulation for words has inspired her to learn as many languages as she can, as one of her goals is to become an interpreter and language teacher. A self- penned outspoken word artist, she began her poetic voyage in late 2015 when she started writing short, personal poems. From there, she went on to write her first spoken word piece in 2017 for the National Independence Festival For Creative Arts (NIFCA). In this competition, she was awarded Bronze in the Literary Arts section for a poem entitled “The User’s Mind: A Predator’s Point Of View” as well as for performance pieces entitled “The Culprit” and “The Outlandish Mind.” From there, she went on to receive silver award in 2018 for “Woman, To You” ; a call to persons to evaluate their respect for women. This was proceeded by a Gold Award and awards for Best Original Entry, Best Performance and Best Presentation in 2019 for her spoken word poem “Public Enemy Number One” depicting a
youngster’s story about how he became just that. Irijah is now the author of the book Raw Soul; a collection of poems showcasing her personality and feelings as she grew from a teenager into a woman. Aside from words, music and the arts are two passions of hers and by utilizing these, she plans to change the world positively. Irijah enjoys writing short plays and scripts for others to perform and has dabbled in pageant-coaching for poetic performers. Her dream and ultimate goal is to be best-selling author, a renowned film-writer and director.
